What is Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF)?

Pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy is a non-invasive, non-thermal application that involves pulsing electromagnetic fields in tissue to promote healing (Strauch et al., 2009). PEMF devices have been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat non-union fractures and cleared to treat post-operative pain and edema, osteoarthritis, and plantar fasciitis.

PEMF therapy can non-invasively treat a variety of pathologies by delivering electric and magnetic fields to tissues via inductive coils. (Gaynor et.al., 2015) Inductive is defined by the process or action of bringing about or giving rise to something.

Thorough and ongoing studies are being documented and discussed by the veterinary and human medical communities indicating multiple and varied beneficial uses of PEMF technology.

I’m so excited to share my experiences and those of other PEMF technicians in what this device can provide for you, your family, friends and animals!!! The results are instant and lasting!!!

History OF PEMF (Pulsed Electro Magnetic Field) Therapy Device

In the United States it was not until 1997 that properly designed clinical trials of magnets began to be reported. Results of several preliminary studies suggested that both static magnets and electro-magnetic therapy may indeed offer therapeutic benefits for several disorders. These findings have helped to intensify research interest in magnet therapy.

Electromagnetic field devices have been used therapeutically for more than a century and for a variety of applications. The era of modern PEMF technologies began in the 1930s when a vacuum tube-based diathermy machine, a radio-frequency electromagnetic device used to deliver heat deep into tissue, was adapted to produce little to no heat. These new non-thermal devices were purported to have therapeutic effects in wound healing and treatment of pain. (Read more in Science Direct article by James S. Gaynor, et.al. August 2018)

WHAT is the HERO PEMF?

  • The HERO PEMF is a new, economical, easy to use and portable High Powered PEMF solution for hoof related issues as well as Hyper-targeted applications on the horse’s entire body. Enjoy effects on humans and pets too!
  • Weighing less than 4.5 lbs, your HERO can be powered with an optional lithium battery that fits inside the case and is capable of operating your HERO for 10 continuous hours!

I charge my battery about once every 3 months!

Mr. Kitty and His HERO!

  • Mr. Kitty is a three-legged barn cat who has been on nerve pain medication for over a year due to an injury. He had become lethargic and overweight, uncomfortable with getting around to his usual routine of hunting and being active. I was working on a horse with the HERO and Mr. Kitty cried and cried until I stopped and brought the machine to him in the aisleway. He asked for it, accepted it and within one 20 second application on the #2 setting he has been a new Mr. Kitty! He is trim, active and so full of life again! He has been off of his meds for over a month now! His owner or I give him a PEMF application about once per week or when he asks for it. Truly amazing when the animals talk to us and tell us what they want. And it worked!!

(Update, Nov 2021: we are into month 5 without meds!)

HERO: for POLL Pain, Restriction of Movement,
Range of Motion

HERO: Multiple USES at once

HERO: Targeted Applications

How does it work?

  • PEMF is non-static, unlike therapy with standard magnets, which are constant or static.
  • To create a PEMF, an electrical current is introduced into a looped wire thereby creating a magnetic field.
  • The electrical current is then activated and then deactivated in cycles between one time per second to thousands of times per second.
  • The cycles and frequencies are dependent upon the unique design of any particular PEMF device.
  • Inflammation is the body’s natural protective healing process. It includes pain, redness, swelling, heat. The PEMF acts to speed up the natural healing process so the human or animal may return to normal function of the damaged or inflamed area.
  • The cell membrane is penetrated by the PEMF frequency waves which then stimulate the cell to release energy, Nitric Oxide and Endorphins (natural pain relievers) and Oxygen. The cell is also cleansed and dumps harmful chemicals to be flushed out of the system.

PEMF Cellular Therapy Process

  • Electromagnetic frequencies penetrate the cell membrane to reach the mitochondria and release Cytochrome C. Proteins transport and each cell releases ATP (energy), Oxygen, Nitric Oxide and Endorphins, as well as stimulating cell cleansing and waste dumping. Blood flow is increased speeding up the natural healing process and reducing pain.
  • Reduces Chronic Inflammation
  • Normal cells are not usually impacted by PEMF. Compounded cells called meta-cells are more likely to be impacted.
  • PEMF has more impact where the cells are out of balance; pathologic; or chronic inflammation.
  • Cellular Therapy for many diseases: Cancer, Psoriasis, Wound Healing and Bacterial Infections.

Equine Use and Benefits

Given the correct amount of current and the optimum application case by case, the accessories for the HERO PEMF device can emit a measurable magnetic field up to 18 inches from the surface of the application.

These are only a few of the beneficial effects:

  1. Tendons
  2. Ligaments
  3. Sore backs
  4. Sore stifles
  5. Chronic back soreness
  6. Sore shoulders
  7. Non-union fractures
  8. Laminitis
  9. Stone bruises
  10. Non-healing wounds

PEMF Application Objectives

  1. Restore normal motion
  2. Neurological Firing Patterns
  3. Release tight and unbalanced muscles
  4. Break up scar tissue and adhesions
  5. Disperse Lactic Acid
  6. Disperse Other Metabolic Waste Products

PEMF Facilitates:

  • Rapid removal of waste products from treated tissues
  • Draws in new blood flow, nutrients and oxygen
  • Enhances circulation of synovial fluid through joint capsules

PEMF Common Application Protocol

  • 6-10 minutes per spot treatment is adequate
  • Treatments can be administered 2-3 times daily (check with vet)
  • Up to the owner and vet how long treatments should continue and if they will be helpful with maintenance
  • Use treatment protocols provided by manufacturer
  • Low intensity levels can be beneficial: practitioner should watch for spasms, twitching and pulsing under the area of the accessory being applied
  • For deeper injuries intensity levels may need to be increased<
  • KEEP PEMF AWAY FROM WATER!!!
  • Give the horse time after treatments to recover before activity begins

PEMF Contraindications

  1. Do not use if patient is pregnant
  2. Do not use near or around pacemakers or implanted electronic devices
  3. Make sure no one being treated has chains on which can cause sparks
  4. Go slowly with horses out of work; they can get sore with initial treatments
  5. Do not use near credit cards, keys, or anything embedded with chips (will demagnetize)
  6. Avoid using PEMF with:
    1. Toxins or agents
    2. Liniment
    3. Tranquilized or sedated animals
    4. But…. DMSO is okay because it already penetrates the cells and works well with PEMF
    5. Antibiotics are okay because PEMF aids in antibiotic performance and aids in cellular mobility

PEMF Application schedule in most cases

  • Use 1: Do not use PEMF more than 20 minutes on each area of the horse
  • Use 2: Do not use PEMF for more than 30 minutes on each area of the horse
  • Use 3: No time limit on areas of use
  • Do not use if the horse has any implanted electronic devices
  • Do not use with pregnancy

How is it utilized in the main-stream Medical Fields?

  1. Specially engineered version of PEMF known as Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) Low-frequency magnetic pulses for brain disorders. It’s being studied for depression, Parkinson’s Disease, epilepsy, schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  2. Stimulates bone repair in non-union and other fractures since the 1970’s. This is the specific use that has been registered by the FDA. Although bone has a remarkable capacity to heal from injury, in some cases the broken ends do not join: these are called “non-union” fractures.
  3. Other conditions utilize PEMF benefits: soft-tissue wounds by suppressing inflammatory responses at the cell membrane level; alleviating pain, and increasing range of motion.
  4. Interestingly, vision has been shown to improve in some instances through PEMF, an area that is still undergoing study.
  5. Under investigation for its effect on osteoarthritis, stress, incontinence, migrains and a host of other conditions.
  6. Studies may be found on www.Pubmed.gov
  7. Wherever we apply this technology it immediately starts the cellular cascade of releasing ATP (energy), vasodilation, cleansing and regenerating cells, flushing out harmful cells and stimulating natural endorphins to minimize pain.
